Honestly? We are in the messy middle and we are owning it.
We have been working on a big overhaul of our Core Range packaging for a long time. This is not a small change. We are upgrading the entire Core Range to a more elevated, luxury aesthetic that better reflects who Soja is and where we are heading. More refined. More intentional. More sustainable in how we produce and package every candle.
The reality is that the cost of raw materials has gone up significantly. Printing. Packaging. Shipping. Everything. And in four years we have never once raised our prices on the Core Range because we refuse to pass that on to you. This overhaul is part of how we protect that commitment long term.
We have been deep in this process for a while now and unfortunately we have hit some unforeseen delays. Our current boxes ran out before the new ones arrived and we had a choice. Stop selling the candles you love, or keep going and be upfront with you about where we are at.
We chose to keep going.
Your candle will arrive in a plain matte black box in the interim. The candle inside is exactly the same. Same wax, same fragrance, same crystals, same performance. We have taken $5 off each Core Range candle while this transition is underway because that feels like the right thing to do.
We are so close. And when the new packaging arrives, we genuinely cannot wait to show you.
Thank you for being on this journey with us.
Luxury candles are designed to burn slowly and evenly, but they do need the right conditions to perform properly.
On your first burn, allow enough time for the wax to melt all the way to the edges. This sets the candle’s burn pattern and helps prevent wax being left on the sides later.
Because this is a large candle, each burn should be long enough to create a full melt pool across the surface. Short burns will affect how the candle performs over time.
Always burn your candle on a flat, stable surface and away from drafts, as airflow can affect the flame and heat distribution.
Our luxury candles use a natural wood wick, which behaves differently to a standard cotton wick.
Wood wicks should not be trimmed down like a cotton wick. They need a slightly higher flame to generate enough heat to melt the wax properly.
If needed, you can gently remove any loose carbon from the top once the candle has cooled by lightly pinching it off. In most cases, this is all that’s required.
Cutting the wick down too far will reduce the flame size and affect how the candle burns.
f your candle isn’t burning evenly or the flame looks low, it usually means the wick isn’t generating enough heat.
This is most commonly caused by the wick being trimmed too short or the candle not being burned long enough to establish a full melt pool.
A strong, steady flame is needed to melt the wax evenly across the surface. When the flame is too small, the wax will start to build up around the edges or the candle may struggle to stay lit.
When a wood wick is trimmed too short, it cannot produce enough heat to perform properly.
You may notice:
A smaller or struggling flame
Wax not melting all the way to the edges
Carbon or small wick fragments in the wax
The candle becoming difficult to relight
Once the wick has been cut too low, it cannot regenerate or grow back!
A drowning wick happens when the flame becomes too small and gets overwhelmed by the surrounding wax.
This is usually a result of the wick being too short, which prevents it from producing enough heat to keep the melt pool clear.
If your candle is still early in its life, you can try the foil method to help restore the melt pool by trapping heat and encouraging the wax to melt evenly.
If the candle is near the end and the wick is too short, it may no longer be able to recover.
Wax left on the sides is usually a result of the candle not being burned long enough during each use.
For a large candle, it takes time for the heat to build and melt the wax all the way across. If the candle is extinguished too early, wax can remain around the edges.
Allowing a full melt pool on each burn will help prevent this.
As your candle reaches the end, you may notice some wax remaining at the bottom.
Our vessels are individually made, and the inside base can vary slightly in shape. Some may be slightly concave rather than completely flat.
Because of this, a small amount of wax may remain once the wick can no longer sustain a flame.
This is normal and not a fault with the candle.
You should stop burning your candle when there is only a small amount of wax remaining at the bottom.
Continuing to burn a candle once it is nearly empty can cause the vessel to overheat, which may lead to damage or cracking.
As a guide, discontinue use when the wick can no longer maintain a proper flame or when the wax level becomes too low.
Our candles are tested to burn evenly and consistently when the wick is maintained correctly.
In most cases, performance issues are related to wick care and burn habits rather than a fault with the candle itself.

Our wooden wicks are made from natural, untreated wood — which means no two are the same.
You may notice a unique flame or sound with each burn. Tiny knots or grain differences in the wood can subtly affect how your wick burns, but this is part of the charm of a natural product.
Hold your candle on an angle and light the wick across the full length. This helps the flame draw evenly. A well-lit wood wick shouldn’t produce soot or smoke — if it does, it likely needs trimming or there may be debris in the wax.
Your candle has a memory! On the first burn, let the wax melt all the way to the edges of the vessel. This usually takes 2–4 hours and prevents tunnelling, helping your candle burn evenly every time.
Before each burn, trim your wick to 5–7mm. This prevents a flame that’s too large or smoky and helps your candle last longer. You can use a wick trimmer or simply pinch off the blackened tip once the candle is cool.
It could be one of two things:
- A knot in the wick: Keep relighting until the flame burns past it.
- Crystals too close to the wick: Light the candle on a slight angle. As the wax melts, the crystals will gently shift away from the wick.
If your wick is sinking below the wax, it needs room to breathe.
Blow out the candle, then use a paper towel to soak up some melted wax. You may need to repeat this once or twice to restore the wick’s height and get a strong, steady flame again.
We include a candle care card with every order — keep it handy for quick tips and a longer-lasting candle.
No, as your candle melts, your crystals will naturally sink into the wax, continuing to release their good vibrations.
Once your candle is finished, simply pour boiling water into the vessel and let it cool. A layer of wax will form at the top of the vessel and your crystals will remain on the bottom. Remove the layer of wax then remove the crystals. Wash the crystals in warm soapy water to clean of any excess wax.
You can remove the crystals after your first burn, making sure you have reached a full melt pool (meaning the wax has melted all the way to the edges of the vessel).
Once you have extinguished your candle and while the wax is soft, you can remove the crystals using a spoon. Place your crystals into a small bowl and wash them with warm soapy water. This will remove any excess wax.
Once you have removed your crystals, they can be used in many ways. You may want to place them in a small bowl or sprinkle them into a plant. They will continue release their good vibrations long after your candle is finished.
